A heatwave in Las Vegas has pushed snowpack into record-low territory, according to climate scientist Daniel Swain. The snowpack is expected to only bring about a third of the normal amount that usually flows down the Colorado River. This has led to a significant decline in snowpack levels. The extreme regional heatwave is only slowly fading, with unprecedented March melt continuing. Meanwhile, Lake Mead and Lake Powell are expected to show the effects of low snowpack conditions. Lake Mead is projected to drop to its lowest level since the dam was built, but not until around December 2027. Kyle Roerink, executive director of the Great Basin Water Network, predicts that the consequences of this arid shift will be widespread.
