The renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Section 702, a controversial provision used by the federal government as a backdoor for spying on Americans, is up for renewal in April. This comes as artificial intelligence, which could potentially enhance the government's mass surveillance capabilities and national security priorities. Section 702 allows law enforcement and intelligence agencies to collect communications between U.S. citizens and foreign nationals without a warrant, allowing for hundreds of thousands of searches a year, many of which are often targeting American citizens. The most egregious targets of this power include members of Congress, donors to political campaigns, and political activists. The current version of FISA, set to expire on April 20, unless Congress acts to renew it, analysts are warning that AI could supercharge abuses under FISA with less accountability and inflame the politically charged national security objectives of the Trump administration.
