Bone marrow reunion highlights life‑saving bonds at City of Hope

Hundreds of bone marrow transplant patients gathered at City of Hope in Duarte, California for an annual reunion to meet their donors. One of the attendees was 18-year-old Vaughn Wilson, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 15 and a donor was found across the world in Düsseldorf, Germany. The transplant allowed Wilson to beat cancer and graduate from high school. Another patient, Lynn Leiro, whose bone marrow transplanted allowed her to see her own daughter graduate. This year's reunion coincided with the 50th anniversary of City of hope's Bone Marrow Transplant program, which began in 1976.
