The Medford Coalition for Values-Aligned Investment has announced its intention to legally intervene in a lawsuit against the city against a divestment ordinance. The ordinance, which was passed in August, divests city funds from companies it believes supply weapons, contribute to human rights violations or contribute to genocide. The lawsuit argues that the ordinance conflicts with Massachusetts investment laws, which require city officials to prioritise liquidity and yield when managing public funds. The Gevura Fund and the National Jewish Advocacy Center have filed a preliminary injunction asking the court to make the ordinance unenforceable until the lawsuit is resolved. Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn has until May 3 to decide whether to allocate $75,000 to fund a legal defense. The Coalition is led by Dr. Lara Jirmanus, a member of Massachusetts Coalition for Responsible Investment.
