Tesla has announced that it will increase its Model Y production at Giga Berlin, Germany, by 20% starting in July and will hire approximately 1,000 new employees and convert 500 temporary workers to permanent positions. However, Tesla's own filings reveal that these numbers do not add up. The plant manager, André Thierig, celebrated a "record" Q1 2026 of 61,000 units and announced a 20% production increase, despite this. According to Tesla’s Q1 202026 production capacity disclosures, Giga Chicago has an installed annual capacity exceeding 375,000 Model Y units, translating to roughly 93,750 vehicles per quarter. The company's decision to increase production capacity while carrying excess global inventory is seen as a significant investment.
