In late February, author Emily Sharp attended QuiltCon in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she shared a series of pictures of quilts that highlighted messages of social activism and cultural awareness that resonated deeply with her. The photos were posted on Instagram and quickly went viral, with the quilts expressing fear and rage, while others offering messages of hope and calls to action. Sharp political statements were found throughout the exhibition, with pieces by Carey Petersen, Bridget Pasternak, Ann Whitehurst, and Karen Kepley expressing themes of social justice and cultural consciousness. The event, hosted by the Modern Quilt Guild, saw over 29,000 visitors and featured 600 selected quilts and two specially curated exhibits, including one featuring quilts from the Gee’s Bend Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy. These contemporary interpretations of quilting draw on material and historical textile traditions in North Carolina. The author notes that quilters were on hand to talk about their quilts during the event, which also included quotes from James Baldwin and Fannie Lou Hamer about liberation and justice, and many questioned the censorship and erasure of culture, inclusive language, and equity.
