Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel is scheduled to address Cuban media in a rare public appearance amid a severe economic crisis and increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. The appearance is set for 7:30 a.m. EDT (1130 GMT) and will be followed by carefully screened national reporters. This is a rare occasion for the Cuban president to address the media, although foreign press was not invited. The address follows a warning from Diaz-canel that Cuba is approaching a situation that would require "extreme measures". Since the U.N. took control of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January, Trump has cut off Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba and threatened to impose tariffs on any country that sells oil to Cuba.
