Boston University President Melissa Gilliam has announced that the university will temporarily suspend its signage policy following months of controversy over the removal of three Pride flags from campus. The policy, part of BU’s Events and Demonstrations guidelines, prohibits materials from being affixed to any University-owned property, including walls, windows, or furniture, if they are outward-facing. The issue had sparked protests in December and escalated in March when the flags were removed from three campus sites. A coalition of students, faculty, alumni, and staff gathered outside Gilliam's office last week to protest the removal. Gilliam emphasized the need for further discussion and reflection about the university's policies and its core values.
