Fidelity, one of the largest 401(k) providers in the country, revealed that average account balances increased to $146,400 in the fourth quarter of 2025, marking the third consecutive year of double-digit growth. The company also revealed that there are now 665,000 401(K) millionaires, an increase from 537,000 one year earlier. This increase is seen as a worrying sign of economic difficulties amid a robust economy. Fidelity's president, Sharon Brovelli, praised the commitment to maintaining responsible savings behaviors and maintaining a long-term perspective. Additionally, Vanguard revealed that 6 percent of workers with 401(c) plans took hardship withdrawals, a new record for the metric.
