The Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy is working with the U.S. Geological Survey and state universities to determine the cause of a series of earthquakes in the Red River Parish area. The quakes occurred on Sunday night and Monday morning, with a magnitude 4.9 earthquake on March 5. The March 5 quake was the second strongest on record in Louisiana, followed by a magnitude 5.3 quake offshore of Grand Isle in 2006. The USGS has reported several earthquakes in this area dating back to December 2025. So far, no clear-cut connection has been found between the two quakes.
