School districts across Oregon are facing budget deficits for the upcoming school year, with Portland Public Schools expected to cut at least $50 million from its budget. The district plans to cut about 300 jobs, shift to more blended classrooms in elementary schools, and reduce the number of specialists assigned to help improve classroom teachers' instructional practices. Similar reductions are also in the works, from Beaverton to Gresham to Tigard-Tualatin. The reductions come despite an 11.4% increase in state support for education during the current biennium. It is unclear whether the majority of the job losses will be absorbed by not replacing or layoffs.
