High school senior Miisaq Paul, a high school senior for the Kipnuk Falcons basketball team, was evacuated from his community in October by Typhoon Halong, leading to the largest mass evacuation effort in state history. He was brought to Anchorage with his family, along with teammates and over 600 Western Alaska residents, raising questions about his future in the sport. The largest evacuation effort was supported by Anchorage residents and Native organizations. The Anchorage School District organized basketball teams for boys and girls from Western Alaska living in Anchorage. The district also expanded after-school Native Youth Olympics offerings and created the two basketball teams. Some evacuated students had just eight days between surviving the storm and starting class at new schools in Anchorage, with older students attending high schools with more people than lived in their community back home.
