A bill in California aims to cap resale prices to prevent ticket brokers and resale platforms from price-gouging fans. The bill, AB-1720, was introduced by California State Rep. Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), would limit the maximum resale price of a ticket to no more than 10% above the original purchase price and impose penalties on parties violating this new requirement. This policy was inspired by similar legislation adopted in other states and the United Kingdom. Haney hopes this bill will provide an immediate response to the issue of high ticket costs and scalping, which has been a topic of discussion among state and federal leaders for years. The legislation provides exemptions for professional and collegiate athletic events, and tickets associated with the FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
