The vehicle identification number (VIN), or VIN), can be used to track and fix recalls, including those caused by dangerous airbags. The VIN is often displayed on the dashboard and on the sticker inside the driver’s door. It can also be used for identification of faulty parts or information about vehicle features. The government offers VIN decoders to identify open recalls and determine where the vehicle was built. Hagerty, the largest insurer of classic cars, uses VINs to authenticate and assess the value of vehicles built before 1981, when the U.S. government set VIN standards. The information VIN provides is constantly evolving as vehicle features change.
