A new photonic device developed by researchers at the University of California could be the key to large-scale quantum supercomputers. The device uses light (photons) fired from miniature lasers to process information instead of electricity, allowing it to be transmitted off the chip in a controlled manner. The MIT team built microscopic structures on the device, which then transmit the light through these structures, these structures are made from different materials and can be used to control the beams. The technology could potentially revolutionise quantum computing.
