Silva Valley-based startup, Nuro, is testing its autonomous vehicle technology in Tokyo, Japan, with Toyota Prius vehicles equipped with Nuro's self-driving software and backup drivers. This is the first overseas expansion for the startup, which recently opened offices in Tokyo. The company did not disclose how many test vehicles are in its fleet or when it might remove the human safety operator from the vehicles. Nuro’s autonomous vehicle strategy, which includes an end-to-end AI foundation model that allows the system to learn as it drives, has been criticized for its lack of safety and for introducing new challenges in Japan. The startup, founded in 2016, initially focused on developing and operating a fleet of low-speed delivery bots and licenses its technology to automakers and mobility providers.
