The first major construction phase of the $54.4 million transformation of Des Moines' north side of Birdland Park is set to begin this spring. The project, described by the city as "the most ambitious" parks and recreation project in Des Moines history, includes a multi-season skate ribbon, a playground, a restroom and concessions building, and a new two-story boathouse. Future construction will include dredging the lagoon and moving Birdland Drive around it. The completion of this phase is expected for summer 2027.
