Rachel Hampton, a licensed attorney and a professor of legal writing at Capital University Law School, argues that Republican state representatives are wasting public dollars and public time by proposing unconstitutional legislation aimed at undermining the will of their constituents. She criticizes House Bill 347, which would reinstate Ohio's 24-hour waiting period for abortion care and expose physicians to civil liability and disciplinary action if they perform an abortion without complying with a litany of disclosure requirements 24 hours prior to the procedure. The bill conflicts with the Ohio Constitution by burdening individuals' voluntary exercise of their reproductive rights. Hampton argues that the bill's sponsors, Reps. Mike Odioso, Josh Williams, Meredith Craig, Kellie Deeter, Marilyn John and Adam Mathews, have shown they are willing to prioritise their own will over the Ohio constitution. The proposed state-mandated disclosures are misleading and not even grounded in evidence-based medical practice, and a prior version of the waiting period requirement has already been stopped by a state court.
