The Oscars was a big night for original movies, with Paul Thomas Anderson winning his first Oscar and Michael B. Jordan winning Best Actor. Other notable winners included Autumn Durald Arkapaw becoming the first woman to win in cinematography and Cassandra Kulukundis winning the inaugural casting award. The show was hosted by Conan O'Brien for the second time, despite some issues including sound issues and the challenge of whether to play winners off. Rob Mills, EVP Unscripted & Alternative Entertainment at Walt Disney Television, described the event as a “heavyweight fight” and a ‘beautiful all time, great show’.
