Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics to pressure Maryland residents into paying for their money, including fraudulent text messages. The Better Business Bureau has previously warned about the "grandparent scam", which involves a caller claiming to be a grandchild who needs $10,000 for bail money. Now, authorities are warning about a new text scam circulating by text message, which claims court records show an unpaid toll violation and requires the recipient to appear in court. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office Consumer Protection Division has advised residents to watch for red flags indicating a potential scam. The scam can generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in theft and is often difficult to catch.
