Kirby Smart, former SEC coach, has suggested that the Big Ten is winning three consecutive national championships due to the SEC's worst teams being too good. This theory is supported by some SEC coaches, who believe that Arkansas, Auburn, and other bottom-of-SEC teams are too good for the title. Smart also acknowledged that there are now more good teams at top of conference than the SEC had previously had. However, he dismissed this theory, stating that the SEC can't produce a national champion because its dregs are too stout and playing them against bottom-feeders takes a toll. The theory is not supported by current SEC teams, but suggests that there is no trophy for having the best 2-10 team.
