Iranian mines scattered across the Strait of Hormuz are preventing the country from widening access to the waterway, as Tehran cannot account for where all of them ended up. The issue arose after Iran used small boats to scatter mines across the strait after the US and Israel launched strikes on February 28. The mines may have been placed without recorded coordinates or in ways that allowed them to drift. This has led to a disruption in Iran's toll system, which allows tankers to pay $1 per barrel of oil in Bitcoin to bypass sanctions. Senior delegations from both countries are set to meet in Islamabad for negotiations to determine whether any truce can survive. The situation has also disrupted global fertilizer and aluminum supply chains, contributing to a broader economic fallout.
