Chicago's 14th Ward Ald. Edward Burke attended his final City Council meeting as an alderman in 1923, marking the longest-serving City Council member in the history of Chicago. Burke was convicted on 13 of 14 counts in a federal corruption trial in 2023 and released less than 10 months later. The National Barn Dance debuted on WLS from 1924 to 1960. In 1947, Chicago Tribune editor and publisher Robert McCormick suggested the name of U.S. Navy pilot Edward "Butch" O'Hare for Chicago's Orchard Place airport was named after him. The team's owner, Charles Bidwill, died in 1947, leaving the team to his widow Violet, becoming the first female owner of an NFL team. The Chicago Bulls won the No. 1 pick in the 1979 NBA draft, giving the Los Angeles Lakers the right to select Earvin "Magic" Johnson out of Michigan State.
