Help Epstein’s trafficking victims: Albany should pass trafficked survivors bills
Published on May 7, 2026.
State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, chairman of the Senate Code Committee, has proposed bills that would allow victims of sex traffickers to recoup damages from the estates of perpetrators who are dead, expand criminal penalties from those who participated in sexual trafficking and establish a one-year look-back period for survivors to file lawsuits against perpetrators and estates past the statute of limitations. These measures have been passed by the committee. Despite efforts by lawmakers and survivors, the federal government has not taken action to criminally or civilly pursue those involved in Epstein's crimes. The bills' provisions have been met with resistance, with some arguing that they should not expand the ability of survivors to seek civil or criminal penalties.
