Poll shows no 'rally-around-the-flag effect' for Trump from Iran war
Published on March 26, 2026.
Pew Research Center has found widespread disapproval for the Iran war, with around six in 10 Americans saying it was a mistake to use military force in Iran. The same number of Americans gave President Donald Trump poor marks for his handling of the war. Nearly half of Americans also don't think the war is going well. The survey, conducted March 16-22, found that under 10% expect the war to be over within a month. A narrow majority of Americans, 54%, believe U.S. military action against Iran will continue for at least six more months. Public opposition is largely due to economic concerns, including rising gas prices and the billions of dollars spent on war costs and munitions. Mark Jones, a political science fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute, said the pressure on President Trump to find an off-ramp from the war will increase the longer it continues. Jones also suggested that the war could negatively impact Republican performances in the November midterms.
