Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that requires proof of citizenship to vote and imposes stricter voter ID restrictions on Floridians. The law, which will take effect until after the midterms, is Florida's version of the federal SAVE America Act, a bill championed by President Donald Trump that is currently stalled in the Senate. Democrats and voting rights advocates have argued that the law will disenfranchise eligible voters who lack access to the documents required to vote. The League of Women Voters of Florida and a coalition of advocacy groups have filed a federal lawsuit to block the law, arguing that it will protect integrity in the voter registration process. The new law requires election officials to verify voters’ citizenship after registration, but differs from Arizona's requirement, which requires those who have shown their passport or birth certificate to obtain a driver’s license.
