WA legislative session ends with budgets passed and a dash of drama

The Washington Legislature ended its 2026 session after passing several budgets and overcoming late-breaking drama over the elimination of a data center tax break. The Democrats' signature policy, a tax on household income greater than $1 million a year, dominated discussions throughout the session. Democrats also prioritized protecting the state from the Trump administration, using their majorities in the House and Senate to prevent the release of voter data and ensure vaccine guidance is based on recommendations from the state rather than the federal government. The $79.4 billion operating spending plan passed without any Republican votes. However, Republicans argue that the budget is a fiscal time bomb and sets the state on a trajectory for further budget problems in future years.
