The needs of Team USA and the San Diego Padres prevented Mason Miller from participating in the United States' 3-2 loss to Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic final. U.S. manager Mark DeRosa explained that Miller was only available for a potential save situation. After the game, Garrett Whitlock took the ball in the ninth inning, but the game ended without using Miller. The decision to not use Miller in the game was made after he had thrown 22 pitches in the semifinal of America's 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic and 18 in the quarterfinal win over Canada.
