The remains of Walter Karl Kinney, a former Santa Rosa resident, have been identified as those of Kinney who disappeared in 1999. The case was resolved thanks to the collaborative efforts of the DNA Doe Project and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. Kinney had already been partially identified in 2003 when remains found near Bodega Bay were confirmed to be his using X-ray records. The DNA profile developed by the volunteer organization was uploaded to a database in 2026 and a team of volunteers identified Kinney as a strong candidate. The discovery of a bone, possibly a tibia and containing surgical hardware, led to the second identification.
