Chicago firefighter Bill Rosales received a kidney transplant from a high school friend, Jason Fuggiti, after he discovered he was desperately needing a transplant due to a rare genetic disorder. Rosales, who had been struggling for months to ask for help, received the transplant from Fuggati, who also serves as a firefighter in the southwest suburbs. The news of Rosales' illness was shared by his fellow firefighters and spread on social media. Despite initially keeping his diagnosis quiet, Loyola Medicine's transplant coordinator Megan Parker said at least 30 people expressed interest in donating, significantly more than the three people typically considered high. Foggiti made the decision to donate his kidney to a stranger when he was not a match.
