Most Virginia national parks saw visitation drops last year

Most of Virginia's national parks saw a decrease in visitor numbers last year, according to new National Park Service tallies. This was due to layoffs, reduced hours, and the longest federal government shutdown in history. Shenandoah National Park saw 1.68 million visitors last year and the Colonial Parkway saw just under 1.6 million visitors. Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania military parks, Manassas National Battlefield Park and Appomattox Court House also saw notable declines. However, George Washington Birthplace in Colonial Beach and Assateague Island saw increased visitor numbers.
