Avalon, New Jersey, plans to use its own sand to restore damaged beaches after storms. The city has approved a $600,000 plan to transport 63,000 cubic yards of sand to its north end, reinforcing eroded beaches that have exposed bulkheads and other infrastructure. This comes as other shore towns face similar issues due to federal spending cuts. Unlike many other New Jersey beaches, Avalon has a regular supply of sand for harvesting. The process involves moving sand from fuller beaches to smaller ones, which has led to erosion. Currently, pedestrians cannot access the beach between Ninth and 18th streets, which will change by Memorial Day weekend.
