US petrol prices rise as Iran war disrupts oil supply
Published on March 11, 2026.
US petrol prices have risen by nearly 19% since the start of the Iran war, with the average price rising to about $3.54 per gallon. This is the first time since July 2024 that the national average has risen above $3.,50 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association. The war has also disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that normally carries about a fifth of the world's traded oil. Despite the increase, fuel remains cheaper in the United States than in Germany due to lower taxes and levies. The US government is looking to increase global supply, possibly by easing sanctions on Russian oil.
