Haritha Sudanagunta, a Massachusetts woman, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in her 30s and had to fight her insurance company, Wellpoint Insurance, who claimed she was too young for the treatment prescribed by her doctor. Her family believes the insurance company based its denial on an arbitrary age limit, which has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the medication. The couple are now speaking about their experience to encourage a policy change. In a statement, a Wellpoint spokesperson said Sudanagunt's diagnosis was rare for limited clinical evidence to guide an initial decision. The company did approve the drug for patient use after it was approved by the FDA without age restriction.
