A team from Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) and community partners are leading a push for a more accessible and inclusive New Jersey. The initiative involves members from the Hackensacks Meridian Neuroscience Institute’s MS Center and Department of Neurology, students from the University of Washington's School of Medicine, local schools, girl scouts, and the Northeastern County Community Council of the National MS Society. The team found that sidewalk accessibility can significantly impact quality of life, independence, and ability to work and socialize. They partnered with scientists and students to map and categorize sidewalk problems using Google Street View. The project has expanded to include the towns of Teaneck and Maywood, and is now beginning to chart the city of Paterson. The work has already resulted in several abstracts presented at the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals.
