A 1997 GM's first mass-market EV, a green 1997 EV1, has been restored by YouTuber Jared Pink and GM, who are helping restore it. The restoration effort attracted GM's attention and the automaker opened up its archives to assist with providing impossible-to-find spare parts, including a replacement windshield. The only privately titled EV1 known to exist, chassis No. 212, was found in a junkyard and put up for auction last year and had been sitting unclaimed for so long that it fell under abandoned vehicle status, which allowed it to be purchased at auction and registered. The winning bid was $104,000, which is $100,000 for a car that doesn't run and has had a brick thrown through its windshield. GM has also provided support by hosting the restoration effort in Detroit. This is a remarkable amount of support from an OEM manufacturer, making the restoration process easier.
