Sunshine Week is dedicated to promoting the importance of public records and open government. However, there are many reasons why government agencies should be involved in increasing transparency. These include the ability to place public meetings online and enforce draconian policies regarding public comment that restrict participation. Many agencies should open their closed portals to allow for more public participation. The New Jersey Legislature recently gutted the public notice law, allowing agencies to publish public notices on their own websites. Public notice notices alert the public to proposed government actions, such as upcoming public meetings or hearings, proposed ordinances, bidding opportunities, proposed budgets or tax hikes, and other actions affecting the community.
