Secretary of State Marco Rubio testified that he was unaware of connections his longtime friend, former Rep. David Rivera (R-Florida), had to Venezuela. Rivera is facing federal charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Venezuela and is accused of pushing to lessen U.S. pressure on the government of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Both he and his wife, Cilia Flores, have pleaded not guilty to drug-trafficking and weapons-related charges. Despite these allegations, Rubio has long criticized the communist regime in Venezuela.
