Dog trainer J.J. Belcher from Sublime Canine in Tucson, Arizona, demonstrates that an electronic collar can keep dogs away from venomous snakes, which can sicken or kill a dog. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that up to 150,000 dogs are bitten by venomous snake each year in the United States. Emergency veterinarian Dr. Sarah Carotenuto from Tucson, says the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson treats four to six dogs daily for rattlesnake bites, and an occasional cat. There are also classes from Illinois to Florida to guard animals against eastern diamondbacks, timber rattlers and other venomous reptiles. Despite debate about the use of electronic training collars, most trainers insist that the use is necessary to ensure a dog will avoid poisonous snakes.
