Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca has called for changes to the metro's tornado warning system after sirens were activated across downtown for storms that threatened parts of the county. This is the second time during his term that sirens across the metro were activated when the threat was in eastern Jackson County, not downtown, according to ABarca. The city has 138 tornado sirens divided by counties and areas, and Emergency Manager Chris Carroll argued that activating each siren individually would take too long for a fast-moving storm. AbARCa argued that the system unnecessarily alerting people unnecessarily and creating a "cry wolf scenario." The National Weather Service created a severe thunderstorm category to distinguish more dangerous storms from generic severe thunderstorms.
