Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been deployed to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in an effort to alleviate airport security staffing issues due to a partial government shutdown. The agents, who were not identified, were seen assisting Transportation Security Administration officers at security checkpoints and standing around. The agency did not clearly explain the agents' duties or how long they might be deployed. The presence of ICE agents left travelers and airport employees bemused, confused, and nervous. The American Association for Immigration and Customs Control (AMAF) also expressed skepticism about the agency's ability to speed up security lines and help travelers. The TSA Local 50, which represents TSA officers, said that ICE agents aren't trained in a way that they can't aggravate the public in a public situation.
