Immigrants seeking asylum are often ordered to countries they've never been to, or are left in limbo due to unexplained changes in U.S. policy. Over 13,000 immigrants who were living legally in the US awaiting rulings on asylum claims suddenly faced so-called third-countrydeportation orders, destined for countries where most had no ties. Many are unable to argue their asylum claims in court and are uncertain if they will be shackled and put on a deportation flight to a country they’ve never seen. The fear of being deported to an unknown country could drive migrants to abandon their immigration cases and return to their home countries. Despite top Immigration and Customs Enforcement legal officials telling field attorneys to stop filing new deportation motions tied to asylum cases, the cases are still ongoing.
