Why airline CEOs are backing a Ted Cruz bill during the government shutdown

The CEOs of Southwest, United, JetBlue, Delta, and other U.S. airlines have urged Congress to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has been shut down for over a month due to a disagreement over federal immigration policy. The shutdown has resulted in reduced pay for employees including TSA agents. The CEOs called for bipartisan legislation, including a bill introduced by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz during the previous government shutdown, to ensure pay and benefits for TSA officers, air traffic controllers and other FAA employees while the government isn't funded. They also highlighted the potential for up to 171 million passengers to fly this spring, a new record.
