Long lines at JFK and LaGuardia airports have caused travel disruption as Congress went into a two-week recess amid a partial government shutdown. Unions and elected officials are advocating for holding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accountable and for paying TSA workers. Lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have been pushing for a bipartisan Senate deal that would have reopened the TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard, but House Republicans rejected it. Jeffries blamed Republicans for the continued shutdown and airport chaos. The usual funding for the DHS, which the TSA agency is under, expired on February 14 due to political disputes over immigration enforcement. Public Citizen Co-President Lisa Gilbert called for Congress to pass a bill addressing the issue.
