Editorial endorsement May 2026: In contested Metro Council races, vote González, Simpson and Phan

The Oregonian/OregonLive Editorial Board has endorsed candidates for contested Metro Council races in May 2026. District 1 Councilor Ashton Simpson and District 2 Councilor Christine Lewis are seeking re-election, while District 4 Councilor Juan Carlos González is running for the Metro Council president position. The endorsements come with a caveat that Metro must use its limited power over Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties to improve oversight, deliver results and restore public trust. The agency's focus on affordable housing construction and administering the Supportive Housing Services tax has put it on the hook for helping solve the region's ongoing homelessness crisis. The homeless services tax is set to expire in 2030 without a voter renewal.
