Archaeologists in the German town of Borken have discovered a 600-year-old Christian Monastery during a construction project. The remains of the 15th-century Marienbrink monastery church were discovered in the town's Brinkerhof neighborhood. The red brick foundations and thick walls of the church, bound by lime mortar, were well-preserved despite the passing of centuries. An attempt to find a destroyed Jewish synagogue near the monastery has not yet revealed any artifacts. The discovery was made in phases, with initial exploratory excavations taking place in 2024 and 2025. The use of lime mortar was crucial in preserving the site, particularly the use of calcium-based binder with heated limestone.
