Paramount Skydance, owner of Paramount+, has acquired Warner Bros. Discovery, home to HBO Max. The acquisition could disrupt Canada's battle for TV eyeballs north of the U.S. border, potentially leading to the merging of HBO Max and Paramount+ into one streaming service. This could see local private broadcasters dependent on American imports more sidelined as U.s. streaming giants like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ increase their cross-border dominance. Bell Media, which had a multiyear program supply agreement with WBD for HBO Max programming on its Crave streaming platform, may struggle to renew its deal to keep HBO Max series on Crave post-merger. The merger could challenge Canadian broadcasters' ability to offer their own American content that dominates primetime viewing.
