BBC Needs “More Scale,” “Radical” Funding Reform, “Reinvention” Amid “Brutal” Financial Outlook and Crisis of Trust, Outgoing Boss Says

The outgoing BBC director general, Tim Davie, has called for a "full-on crisis" of trust and a "brutal" financial state of affairs, according to Davie. He emphasized the need for decisive steps and risks to retain audience reach and trust. He called for more long-term planning instead of short-term dealmaking and for radical funding reform. Davie also highlighted challenges such as expanding restrictions on journalism around the world, AI, and misinformation and disinformation. The BBC recently announced a new three-year deal with The Traitors and Celebrity Traitors, which will keep the hit show on the BBC until at least 2030. The broadcaster has also begun negotiations with the UK government about a new royal charter governing the broadcaster for the next decade.
