Nambibia's plan to produce a large hydrogen production facility in the Tsau ǁKhaeb National Park could lead to jobs and environmental concerns, but also risks the unique plant and animal life of the region. The project is part of a plan by Hyphen, a joint venture led by the Germany-based green energy group Enertrag, to export clean-burning fuel that could help reduce emissions elsewhere. However, conservationists have voiced concerns about the potential impact on rare succulents and endangered African penguins. The Namibian Chamber of the Environment (NCE) has suggested that the project should be labelled "red hydrogen" as it risks driving many unique species onto the biodiversity "red list". The project, which is still in the feasibility stage, could initially produce 375 gigawatts of renewable energy and power almost 400 million LED bulbs.
