The Trump administration has reintroduced the use of terms like "illegal alien" and "alien" in official communications, reversing a shift from the Biden administration's shift towards more humanizing language like "undocumented noncitizen" or "migrant". These terms have been used since the late 1700s as a neutral term for non-citizens in the U.S. However, Llana Barber, director of the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota, argues that political speech is never neutral and that using these terms dehumanizes individuals who are already feeling trauma. She argues that using such terms makes it appear as though you are accused of a crime by using the term 'illegal alien' and makes it easier to justify what happens next. Critics argue that such terms provide clarity for whom and whom, while others argue that they provide clarity, they often fall apart at their expense.
